ITERATIVE DESIGN  

ITERATIVE meaning: doing something again and again, usually to improve it. (Adjective) 
Show iterative improvement throughout the design, development & testing process
NZQA assessment requirements are for you to use the iterative design process during your architecture project.

DEFINITION
Iterative improvement is a design method based on a cyclic process of prototyping, testing, analyzing, refining & feedback by others throughout the design process.
This process is intended to ultimately improve the quality & functionality of a design.

NZQA REQUIREMENTS

"Iterative improvement requires that the learner develop a functional outcome using documented cycles of improvement. This may include adding features to the outcome. This needs to be shown through deliberate cycles of improvement based on testing and trialling rather than just incremental development. Iterative improvement should be aimed at making a better product. 
This evidence (drawings/models/photos/images/text) of iteration needs to be provided for moderation. 

Students should be able to provide sufficient evidence of the development of the outcome. 

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
Do drawings of your ideas, develop your ideas by making physical models, 3D models using Minecraft or Sketchup, taking regular screenshots of your work, writing brief descriptive nots of your work in progress, get regular feedback from other people, improve your design based on feedback & how you evolve your project design.
Demonstrate that you have
improved your architecture project using iterative design for the benefit of the people (or animals) who use might your project if it was built.

ITERATIVE EXAMPLE

The wheel was 'invented' in the Stoneage 3500BC. The wheel's iterative improvement has gone from a rough round shape to a regular circle shape & different materials like stone, wood, steel & rubber. Modern iterative wheel designs include triangle wheels, wheels made of objects like the boot-wheel bike & the skateboard-wheel.

CYCLIC PROCESS OF IMPROVEMENT
The iterative design process flows like a circle; always repeating the same process.

​Defining users needs > design ideas > drawings & physical models > 3D prototyping (Minecraft & Sketchup) > feedback from others > analyzing feedback > evolve design >  feedback from others > repeat the process several times to improve your design.

UNDERSTAND: research an architecture project, what are the users needs, research the site, think about design ideas
EXPLORE: draw your ideas, make physical prototype models, use Minecraft or Sketchep to 3D model your ideas
MATERIALISE: get feedback from others, show how can you improve your design, do more design drawings, re-model your Minecraft or Sketchup models, take screenshots of your work throughout the project & add descriptive notes

ITERATIVE DRAWING
Do lots of drawings to consider your designs ideas. Use 2 sentences to describe each design. Get feedback from others about your designs. These example drawings of a snake shows the iterative improvement of the curves of my single line snake drawing.
These drawings are part of the iterative design of the SnakeTower example project.

This is a series of iterative design concept models I made for SnakeTower using 1 sheet of paper I drew triangles on then folded into different tower shapes to analyse forms.

3D MODEL SCREENSHOTS
Once you have decided on your design by drawing & model making then use Minecraft or Sketchup to 3D model your design. Take screenshots of your modeling throughout the project & add descriptive notes. Show how you evolve your design from drawing to 3D.

ITERATIVE DESIGN USING LETTERS 
TASK: Divide an A4 paper into 4. Write your name in capitals. Pick 4 letters.
Draw the letters as proportional length vertical lines. Draw the letters as a single line.

Use 'iterative design' to evolve the concept of 'letters' into designs of 'flowers & faces'.

​Draw the letters as a flower. Draw the letters as a face. My drawings are 'iterative design' because they visualise 
4 versions of flower drawing designs & 2 versions of faces drawing designs only using 4 letters from my name.
