11.12.13.AOF - tERM 2 ONLINE
Until we go back to AC after Covid19 all AOF classes will be online via Google Meet at the normal timetable class times.
This page is a weekly summary of what we discuss online each week. You can continue with your Animal Pavilion project at home.
If you have limited computer/internet access you can draw & make conceptual physical models of your Animal Pavilion ideas.
If you have any questions about your AOF assessments or architecture questions you must use this Distance Learning question form on the home page of the www.architectureschool.co.nz page - answers are on www.architectureschool.co.nz/aofquestions.

WEEK 6 - Term 2
This week is the half way point through the academic year. By now you should have 100% completed the 4x Stage #1 Pre-Design documents. Your Stage #2 Design Document with photos of your drawing & a physical model should be complete.
Your AOF Google Drive folder should be setup with the 5 sub-folders & all your work is in the correct folders.

WEEK 4 - Term 2
Architect's skills
This Architects Skills information is on the home page of www.architectureschool.co.nz
File Management
In your AC Google Drive, use a folder system to organise your digital content. Create a main folder, then sub-folders within the main folder to manage your content. Name all your files with the correct description. www.digital.school.nz/project-information.
For example: Create a folder in your AC Google Drive & name it AOF2020.
Within this main folder create sub-folders called: Documents, Photos, Images, Video, Other.
Save your 4x Stage#1 Pre Design documents into the documents folder.
Save the photos you take of your drawings & models in the Photos folder.
Save any images you download from the internet in the Inages folder.
Save any screen recording or 3D animation videos in the Video folder.
Save any other files like audio or minecraft files etc on the Other folder.
Share a link to your AOF2020 folder with Marc.

WEEK 3 - Term 2
plan - elevation - cross section
Remember when you drew a plan-elevation-cross section of an Apple & Egg at the start of the year?
As part of your design drawings you should be drawing plans-elevations-cross sections of your Animal Pavilion design ideas.
Examples are the drawings for this Moon accommodation prototype design based on origami & Biomimicry - imitation of nature.
www.designboom.com/architecture/saga-space-architects-lunark-moon-habitat-prototype
Can you see the plan & elevation of a person in the drawings? This shows a sense of 'scale + proportion' of the design.
Almost every architecture project on Designboom includes plans-elevations-sections... study them for inspiration :)
NASA is planning to send people to the Moon by 2024 - www.nasa.gov/artemis.

how to think like an architect - design process
Architect Barry Berkus explains the 'how + why' of designing a house. Use the same principles to design your Animal Pavilion.
DESIGN BRIEF: Enjoy the view, beach & ocean views, bring extended family home, a place that's private for them also.
DRAWING: "As you sketch you draw a diagram, the diagram becomes architecture" + "Design with bubble diagrams"
DESIGNING: "It is an exercise in thinking with the hand & the mind- it all begins with a pattern diagram" + "The idea of where things are & how they inter-relate, the adjacencies of rooms & opportunities of the sun & views of the site"
SUN: Morning sun from the east, afternoon sun from the west. "Always think of the kitchen enjoying East light, sun is a wonderful thing to gain in the morning & afternoon warmth of the sun in the living room"
WIND: Internal courtyards protect from the wind, shelter people around a fireplace. Internal courtyard design dates back to Roman era.
SUMMARY: "The greatest reward an architect can have is a happy client, a great building & place they can go back & visit because of the meaning of what they design & the strength of the architecture"

form + function ~ function + form
Whats more important when you design architecture - form or function?
"Form + Function" means the exterior form of a building looks is more important than the internal function of the building.
"Function + Form" means the internal planning of a building room layouts is more important than the exterior form of a building.
"Function + Form" means the internal planning of a building room layouts is more important than the exterior form of a building.
Look at the examples of Form + Function on www.architectureschool.co.nz/design & www.architectureschool.co.nz/frank
An example of Form + Function is the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angles, USA designed by Frank Gehry in 2003. $240M.

stage #2 design
For the design stage you need to document your design process by taking photos of your drawings & models.
Make a copy of the document for your year level & add your Animal Pavilion design photos & comments to your doc & share with Marc.

design brief
A 'design brief' is a short description of your project that you design to. Designing to a brief will help you focus your ideas.
What is your Animal Pavilion design brief? Determine your own design brief based on your Stage #1 Pre Design research.
This is the brief, specifications & key words of my Snake Tower project that I decided for myself.
www.architectureschool.co.nz/snaketower
BRIEF: Design a multi-use tower for park rangers & tourists near a waterhole in Zakouma National Park, Chad.
BRIEF SPECIFICATIONS: easy to build/unbuild/move, custom made pre-fabricated modular building materials, be able to change structure shape of tower, flexible floor layouts, water collection based on Warka Water towers technology.
BRIEF KEY WORDS: Animals co-habitat, safety, valuable, protect, tourists, observe & experience, multi-uses, breaks the expectations, ornate sculptures, captures your attention.

stage #2 design drawings
Before you can start 3D modeling your Animal Pavilion you need to draw ideas about what your design looks like.
Practice your square, X, circle, triangle drawing skills. Then do a series of 4 drawings per page like this example.

iterative design development
NZQA wants to see your 'iterative design development' when designing your Animal Pavilion.
This means doing drawings & making physical models to develop your ideas, the process of design by evolving your ideas.
This image is an example of ‘iterative’ drawing, my first snake drawing on the left is budget, the last one is great.
These drawings let me explore the curve of the tail & the shape of the head of a snake – this is an example of iterative development.

inspiration board
You need to consider these 8 design points: shape, form, texture, colour, material, geometry, proportion, space.
The best way to consider these points is to create a 'inspiration board' that you want to incorporate into your Animal Pavilion.
This image is my SnakeTower inspiration board example. What does your inspiration board look like?

physical models
You need to make at least one physical model to explore the 3D shape of your Animal Pavilion during the design stage.
Make physical models of your design ideas, using paper, cardboard, plastic, tinfoil, bamboo skewers, chopsticks, play dough, Lego… whatever you have around the house. Take photos of your models & add them to your Stage #2 Design document.
The spiral stair model made from cardboard, bambook skewer & hotglue glue & folded paper form model were made by Terry Cheng 13AOF 2019 in one class. The SnakeTower models were made by Marc by drawing triangles on A4 paper then folded into shapes.

design era
For 12AOF, NZQA wants you to design to an architectural design Era of your choice.
What are the key design features of the design era you choose? Incorporate these design features into your Animal Pavilion design.

the 4 stages
These are the 4 stages of the architecture design process. What stage are you at?
When you get to Stage 3 & start to 3D model your architecture you can use Sketchup or Minecraft or Tinkercad.
When you get to Stage 4 you can use Photoshop or Pixlr or TwinMotion to create visuals of your architecture in your site.

Culture
Design for culture. What is the culture of your site? Consider past historical use of the land, how the land is being used now, the people, the places & the spaces that define a sites culture.
The case study example of designing for culture is the Auckland City Rail Link & Aotea Station design.
Read how Maori principles shaped the City Rail Link's award winning design.
